They started a life of fishing and agriculture and have continued to grow a vibrant community for the last 150 years. Yelapa roughly translates to “where two rivers meet the sea.” This native land is sacred and can only be owned by the founding families. As a comunidad indigena, this is protected for the families who are recognized as having always lived there. The land is held collectively, by the community as a whole. There is no private ownership of land by anyone.
